 June Trivia
Based upon the number of responses, May's Trivia was a no brainer. This month I challenge you to Enstein's Riddle.

It is rumored that Albert Einstein made up this logic puzzle and he claimed that 98% of the population could not solve it. Are you among the 2%?

There are 5 houses, each of a different color. Each of their owners has a unique heritage, drinks a certain type of beverage, smokes a certain brand of cigarette and keeps a certain variety of pet. Solder GuyLearn to Solder

Soldering is a process in which two or more metal items are joined together. Some frequent applications of soldering include assembling electronic components to printed circuit boards (PCBs), making permanent but reversible connections between copper pipes in plumbing systems, assembling and repairing jewelry and joining lead came and copper foil in stained glass work.

If soldering sounds like a handy skill to possess click here for a 19 minute video that  teaches you how to solder and desolder.

The Heat Is On

grilling

Temperatures are rising and that means grills are heating up all over the country. Keep the following in mind to enjoy a safe BBQ season!

Fire is the most destructive force in the universe and you are inviting it into your backyard. Know your fire and how to control it and know how to cut fuel supplies, extinguish fires and call the fire department.

Bacteria grows at any temperature above freezing and stays alive until that temperature hits 165 degrees F. Remember you are more likely to get food poisoning than you are to get the flu.

Read the manual and follow all the safety restrictions.

Use the 10 to 5 rule when lighting a gas grill. If the grill does not start within 10 seconds, turn off the gas, leave the lid open and give it 5 minutes before you try again.

Frequently
check gas lines for leaks by brushing soapy water over the hoses and connectors. If you find a leak you need to replace that part before you grill again.

Remember the number one problem with charcoal grills is lighting the charcoal. It is extremely dangerous to add lighter fluid to hot coals. While liquid lighter fluid burns, evaporated (gaseous) lighter fluid explodes.

Grease that collects in your grill builds up over time and can cause flare-ups. Flare-ups are more than a nuisance, they are potentially lethal. This is why you need to keep your grill clean.

Cooking meats, particularly red meat and chicken at very high temperatures until surface charring occurs can cause cancer causing substances (Heterocyclic Amines)to form. Here's how to minimize risk:
* Use marinades
* Do not over cook foods
* Use thinner or smaller cuts of meat
* Keep grill temperatures relatively low (under 600 degrees cooking temperature)

Make sure the fire is out when you are done. With a gas grill turn of the control valves and the tank valve. Make sure that any burning grease is put out and let the grill cool completely before you cover it. On a charcoal grill replace the lid and close all vents. Let charcoal burn out and wait about 48 hours before disposing of ashes.
